New pattern of CLAT
CLAT is changing, So are we.
Charles Darwin famously said, “Not the strongest, nor the most intelligent, but one who adapts to change will survive.” With the changing pattern of questions asked in CLAT, merely reading basic book, solving papers at home may not suffice. At least, not for those for whom CLAT is new or for those who have been unable to crack it.

LATEST PATTERN
Comprehension based questions would be asked from
Quantitative Techniques,
English,
Current Affairs,
Deductive Reasoning and
Logical Reasoning.

So, CLAT will no more be a Speed based Exam and it will go up to be called as a Knowledge based Exam which will evaluate a candidate based upon their aptitude. Was any thought given to the ‘Quantitative Aptitude’ section, earlier? It had have the least number of questions (a score of 20) in the CLAT but now this pattern could change. The Quant section, though, must be viewed as a score booster. Days are gone for students who could qualify the exam based upon their memory.

The designated authority has cleared the point that they need a candidate who is sharp, analytical and accurate. They have strong conviction that candidates can be taught the legal sections afterwards. But they have to be logical first. This is the reason, you can expect a paradigm shift in the CLAT 2022 pattern. Questions from Legal section can be asked under the section of Deductive Reasoning. Deductive reasoning is extremely important for the legal profession. Cases are decided upon the deductions drawn from facts and circumstances.

For example: In criminal law, it isn’t a common practice to find the accused present at the crime scene and being caught red-handed by the authorities every single time. In most cases, the forensic experts have to be called in to recreate the scene of crime on the basis of circumstantial evidence. This is all a part of investigation, based on which, a charge sheet is filed. Consequently, these questions would be based upon Common Legal acumen which is expected from a common civilian.
Also, with the increase in the marks of reasoning we can expect a few surprises in the type of questions. It is therefore strongly advised that CLAT aspirants refer LSAT & GMAT reasoning papers for practice.

If I talk particularly about CLAT, there is a section of English and it carries approximately one-fifth of the overall weightage. In this section, the proficiency in English is tested on the basis of questions related to comprehension passages and grammar. In the comprehension section, candidates are evaluated on the basis of their understanding of the passage, the central theme, meanings of words used in the passage etc. The grammar section requires correction of incorrect grammatical sentences, filling of blanks in sentences with appropriate words, etc.

All the aspirants who are preparing for CLAT know how important it is for a student to be aware about each and every detail of – News, Awards & Honors, Persons in News, Sports & Games, International, Places in the News, Science & Technology, Governance & Politics, Environment & Biodiversity, Constitution & Law, Defense & Security, States, Art & Culture, Business, Economy & Banking, Government Schemes & Projects, Reports & Indices, Events & Observances etc.; as all these topics are part of current affairs and newspaper is a prominent source of it. It is a section that can’t be neglected at all.

With future looming on the horizon in the upcoming months, these months can be crucial in boosting your preparedness, mindset and confidence – each of these key towards cracking the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) in May. Now, it’s that time of the year when the plot thickens for a Class XII student. Let’s frame your future by preparing w.r.t. the modified pattern of CLAT.

          CLAT 2020 Exam Analysis

          CLAT 2020 ANALYSIS

Let’s begin typically in CLAT 2020 style by portraying a few lines from the passage encountered in the exam. “The covid-19 pandemic has taken the entire world hostage in less than four months, and the global economy has been hit the hardest with governments across the globe implementing stringent policies including lockdown to control the coronavirus outbreak.” The pandemic today presents unpredicted challenges in day to day lives of people across the globe. The challenges are no way less hard for students, no matter to what age group they belong. Talking specifically about aspirants of various entrance exams, along with hard work and knowledge, patience played a vital role in their preparation.

The updated CLAT 2020 Pattern is given below:

          a. Maximum Marks - 150
          b. Duration of CLAT 2020 Exam - 02:00 Hours
          c. Multiple-Choice Questions - 150 questions of one mark each
          d. Negative Marking - 0.25 Mark for each wrong answer

After a wait of 4 long months CLAT 2020 was finally conducted on 28th September 2020. CLAT is organized by the Consortium of National Law Universities consisting of the representative universities. There was a change in pattern, which all the aspirants were aware of, but the shocking part was that the candidates mentioned that the exam was different from the Mocks added by the officials. It was a 2 hours exam. The CLAT 2020 was lengthy and moderately difficult as mentioned by most students coming out of the center. When we mark exams as lengthy, we are not just talking about passages but also options given to check the answer were lengthy. There were a total of 29-30 passages included in the exam comprising the total 150 mark weightage.

LET’S OVERVIEW THE SECTIONS AT A GLANCE.

Current Affairs, including General Knowledge - Current affairs was a tricky and difficult section. Core factual current affairs weren’t asked in the exam. However, analytical based current affairs were asked. There were a total of 7 passages. Students who have followed regular reading as a habit, suggested by faculties and Consortium would have been able to easily mark answers for this section.

It was much recently based unlike AILET i.e. as recent as September. Important recent events like On-going coronavirus Outbreak, National Education Policy, UAE-Israel Peace Deal and Atmanirbhar Bharat Scheme were covered in the exam.

Legal Reasoning - It was a section with questions of moderate difficulty. The questions were easy but all the 8 passages were lengthy and complex. The questions primarily covered the current news around the legal affairs.
Students who have read passages around current legal events would have found the passages in the question paper to be quite familiar to those events. Thus, reading and a good understanding of various important legal terms would have given you an edge over other students in this section as well.

Logical Reasoning - This section was somewhere between Easy to moderate. Critical reasoning dominated this section with easy to moderate questions asked in almost all the 5 passages. Passages were based on Current events which made it easier for students to understand it and mark answers accordingly.

English Language - This section was predictably from Easy to moderate difficulty for most students. As mentioned by Consortium, grammar can be asked in the exam, there were no questions from grammar primarily.
There were no lengthy passages amongst all the 6 passages asked. Contextual Vocabulary was asked in the questions. The topics covered in the questions asked were Figures of speech, Idioms and Phrases etc.

Quantitative Techniques - This was a very difficult section with calculative questions. Geometry based passage was asked. Students who were well-versed with calculations also found all the 3 passages difficult. A set of 5 questions were completely wrong. Strange to believe that the conducting bodies failed to showcase 150 flawless questions in the time span of a year.

If someone asks me, what could be the one mantra to clear CLAT 2020? I would straight away answer him/her - READING. Gone are those days when anything could be achieved only by rote learning. By conducting such exams, universities are portraying the quality of students required to study law. Law is not just a course but a lifelong process of reading, studying and analyzing. And these habits or I say qualities need to be incarnated in the law students.

Dare to Be a CLAT Topper?

10 INGREDIENTS OF THE RECIPE TO BECOME A TOPPER!!

CLAT is the national entrance to get through to the prestigious law colleges of the country. It is one of the important milestones in the journey of becoming a successful lawyer. However, the journey to achieve this milestone is not a smooth one and has its own ups and downs. As quoted above, it isn’t an easy journey but there are some qualities in an individual that can make this journey easier and a great learning experience for them. It is not necessary that these qualities will be innate in an individual as these may have to be acquired over a period of time. Let’s discuss these one by one:

          1. CONSISTENCY - This is one quality that often makes an average or weak student achieve his target or goals. You must have heard of the famous age old saying-‘Slow and steady wins the race.’ The famous story of tortoise and rabbit sums this trait in all. It is important for a student to be regular in the class and with his studies. Doing small amount of learning on a daily basis is not tough. However, keeping the same for the last minute definitely adds on to the pressure. Make sure that you are regular to the class.

          2. DISCIPLINE - This is one quality that is seriously lacking in today’s youngsters. This basically emphasizes on developing a routine and then following it religiously. This routine needs to be clearly demarcated in the terms of hours allotted to studies, work, play and hobbies. A daily routine also helps in building the consistency of an individual.

          3. ACCEPTING FAILURES - Everyone has bad days. It is not possible to be at your best on a daily basis. There will be certain failures that you need to encounter in life. These failures should be the bungee bags that provide you the strength and power to bounce back after a failure. No failure can be strong enough to put a stop to your journey and weaken your will power to achieve your goals.

          4. ANALYTICAL THINKING - You need to develop the art of crucially examining the situations and analyzing them carefully before arriving at any conclusion. The art of thinking rationally is one big asset that a lawyer needs to start nurturing right from the beginning of his journey.

          5. SELF-CONFIDENCE - True Knowledge enlightens an individual and it is this knowledge that provides a strong foundation to an individual. Ultimately, this strong foundation leads to building of a self-confident individual. This is one of the most important qualities that a person needs to imbibe because this is one quality that will actually help an individual to sail through the journey easily.

          6. SELF ACTUALIZATION - One needs to be aware of his abilities, strength and weakness. The person who has developed the art of self-actualization is clear about his shortcomings and knows the area that one needs to focus upon. For this, a person needs to be receptive to criticism and failures. These help the person to understand what went wrong, where it went wrong and how could it have been prevented.

          7. CLEARLY DEFINED GOALS - The goals need to be precise, clearly defined and achievable. Learn to set short targets such as achieving a good score in the weekly tests. Once you achieve these small targets, achieving the bigger goal, which is definitely cracking the CLAT entrance seems workable.

          8. RESPECT YOUR TEACHERS - Students need to understand the value of good teachers in their journey. It is their teachers who make the difficult and boring subjects easy and understandable. They need to acknowledge and value their efforts.

          9. DEVELOP A HOBBY - Amidst all the stress and cacophony of the exam preparation, make sure that you develop one hobby that becomes your best friend in this journey. It could be anything like playing chess, cooking food, playing guitar etc. These hobbies will become great stress buster during the times when stress is at its peak.

          10. TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH - You must have heard your elders often saying that a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. During the preparation of an entrance, one needs to take utmost care of their health. Try developing healthy eating and sleeping habits. Refrain from mobiles as these are big distracters. Avoid Junk food and resort to something that is fresh and home cooked.

These were some simple and handy tips that will make your journey productive. Try incorporating these one by one in your daily schedule and you will definitely see visible and quantifiable results in your preparation. We have contributed our bit in your journey by sharing our experience in the form of these ingredients and now it is your turn to implement them in your life. Always remember that more than the destination; it is the journey that counts.
